This will ensure that all First-Class, Priority Mail, and Media Mail sent through USPS is automatically forwarded to your new address. You can change your address in person at any USPS branch or online by filling out an Official USPS Change of Address form. Not moving just yet? No worries! You can set your mail forwarding date for any time in the next 30 days when you file.

Budget, Plan, and Pack the Big Move

As your moving day approaches, there are some other items you'll want to check off your list. Depending on where you're relocating from, you may have a long distance to travel--which could create headaches when it comes to getting your belongings moved to your new place. Hiring professional movers can be a significant expense, but it's often one that's worth it many times over for a long-distance move. Take your time pricing out options for moving companies, and check that any company you hire can provide proof of insurance for your protection and peace of mind.

Some moving companies may also offer packing services to alleviate some of the stress of moving. If it's in your budget to use a packing service, this could free up a lot of your valuable time. If not, just be sure to get a head start on your packing; waiting until the last minute is a recipe for unnecessary stress and headaches.

Update Your License, Registration, and Other Important Documents

In addition to updating your address with USPS, you'll also need to plan for other legal things to do when moving to a new state. This includes updating your driver's license or state ID, vehicle registration, and other important documentation (such as your voter registration) when you move. The specific steps you'll need to follow will vary by state.

In New Mexico, for example, you'll need to apply for a new ID or driver's license/registration at your local Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) office. Here, you'll need to provide proof of your identity in the form of a birth certificate or Social Security card, as well as your current driver's license and proof of New Mexico residency. To update your vehicle registration, be sure to bring proof of insurance, VIN, and your vehicle title or bill of sale.

Get Settled in and Explore the Area

Once your move is complete, you may be wondering what to do after moving to a new state. Aside from unpacking and getting settled in, now is a great time to start exploring your new city. Walking in your immediate neighborhood can be an excellent way to meet new people while exploring local parks, coffee shops, restaurants, and other attractions. You might also consider joining local clubs to engage in your favorite hobbies or even volunteering at local events to expand your social circle and give back to your community!

From a logistical standpoint, you'll also want to consider what to look for when moving to a new state. This may include finding a new doctor, dentist, hair salon, and other services that you'll eventually need. Asking neighbors or colleagues for recommendations can be a great way to connect with the best professionals in the area.
